Building the Future of Energy:
Southern Company is working tirelessly to prepare for the future of energy for the benefit of the people it serves.
Through the Energy Innovation Center in Atlanta, Southern Company is developing inventive ideas and programs that work to bring better, more reliable and more efficient energy across the country. The company is working to answer the energy industry’s most pressing issues — like electric battery storage, electric car technology, and the role of big data in consumers’ lives. Since 1970, Southern Company has invested more than $2 billion in industry-leading research and development.
Southern Company also is working toward meeting the future needs of its customers by expanding its product offerings to include energy that is clean, safe, reliable and affordable across the entire portfolio of energy sources. Southern Company’s subsidiaries continue to expand their utilization of generation facilities that rely on renewable resources to produce electricity, including those based on solar, wind, biomass and other renewable platforms. Since 2012, the Southern Company system has added or announced more than 4,000 megawatts of renewable generation.
As of 2016, Southern Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company and a leading U.S. wholesale energy provider, owns more than 1,700 megawatts of solar generating capacity at 27 facilities operating or under construction in California, Georgia, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina and Texas. Nineteen of these facilities are co-owned by third-parties with Southern Power having the majority ownership. And with the largest voluntary solar portfolio of any investor-owned utility in the United States, Georgia Power is a national leader in solar energy. In addition, Georgia Power began offering rooftop solar to customers in July 2015.
Southern Company also has been actively involved in the research and development of electric transportation. By offering lower electricity rates and programs for off-peak usage, Southern Company helps its customers reduce both costs and environmental impact. Customers save on charging, while commercial businesses increase efficiency by using electricity to transport their goods.
Through its collaborations with partner organizations, Southern Company is working on developing the next generation of electric vehicles. The company is testing Smart Charging strategies that would maximize the number of vehicles that can be charged with current energy capacities. They are also working with university labs to test new technologies that may maximize range from battery packs and wireless charging equipment that can charge vehicles with no cord, and potentially charge your EV while you drive.
Finally, Southern Company is bringing forward a new generation of products and solutions to its customers’ homes through partnerships with like-minded companies. Southern Company was the first energy company in the U.S. to offer Nest’s third-generation product line to customers. Additionally, Georgia Power customers can receive the Nest Thermostat at no cost when they sign up for the Smart Usage Rate.
